A Day Of Rest   10" x 12"   O/P

For this particular painting, I decided that I would try something a little different.
I started out by using a three inch wide brush, and sloppily applied a very loose mixture of Prussian blue and alizarin mixed with my medium of odourless mineral spirits. Following the scene, I layed in quickly the big shapes . For example, a rough shape of the barn, the lean to and a loose feel for the trees. The value of the mix was not unlike a value five and lighter. I waited a few minutes to allow the medium to evaporate, leaving a thin irregular wash like covering of colour. This turned out to be my base colour of the main objects in my painting.

Continuing with the painting, I loosely layed in the composition for the painting using  the loose background colour as my guide. I continued as I normally would laying in the mother colours of the big shapes that I had drawn. All the while taking out colour, mixing colour on the panel and adding colour etc.to establish the objects in the painting. I was mostly using a number six flat oil painting brush. Smaller brushes for the detale.

Now that most of the painting has been layed in I have a better idea of what will happen in the sky. The sky is the last thing to do before the painting can be "tweaked" or finished.

I really enjoyed the loose start to this painting and It was a reminder from time to time to "stay loose" for the rest of the painting.

'til next...

me encanta esa utilización de colores frios contrarrestados con la calidez del primer plano.
