Last Of The Winter Snow ..7" x 9" ..O/P

What a great day to paint ! Spring is in the air, I can smell it. If I am not mistaken, Monday is the first day of spring in our neck of the woods.
In the last few days and nights, the "quacking" overhead of the migrating ducks could be heard . Sighted my first Robin yesterday and just had to "stamp" the back of my hand. ..Remembering a childhood thing..

I started out with a pink stained panel that had a rough texture of gessoed brush strokes. I decided that I would use a larger brush than usual to start the painting once I had the composition plotted on the panel. I also decided to concentrate on placing in the larger shapes. In doing this, a dark wash was applied, all the while, paying attention to the different values, aided by 'squinting' .
A thought here, ..I feel that it is important, to deal with 'shapes' or their impressions when laying in these values than to think in terms of 'things' or objects. I'll save the painting of details until finishing the painting.
Continuing with this method, I lay in the darker areas with darker values of paint with less medium. I found that as the darker areas were placed in, the temptation to apply a light area or value next to or near it was strong. Really strong .
I gave into temptation ! ...In retrospect, it was a good thing.
The job now was to finish the painting by continuing to follow the same method with the lighter colours and their values.
Lastly, refine the "impressionistic" details, soften some edges and check the overall values. Finished !
I wish the photo reproduction was as bright as the original. I will have to work on that !
Happy Spring to All.. !
'til next..

nice Frank. If that photo doesn't do your piece justice, then it really must have fantastic colour.. because it looks great here. Interesting reading about your process.. I go for the darks first too as a general rule when out painting, and often give in to the tempation you talk of by juxstaposing lights. My results never turn out like yours though!! :,( lol

Great work!

cheers Mike

Michael..

"I go for the darks first too as a general rule when out painting, and often give in to the tempation you talk of by juxstaposing lights."

I have found it easier to adjust the darks and lights (values)if I see them early in the painting and adjust as I go. (working around the painting)
I have also found that if I ignore the lights for the darks at the beginning of the painting, I end up with a lower key painting than I had planned for or desired. :)

Thanks for the compliment, Mike.
