Pine On The Rocks ..11" x 14" ..Oil/Panel

I think that winter is here to stay this time. The days have been cold enough that I feel the snow that has fallen lately will be here to stay and not melt until spring. Now, that may be just me !

It is not usually how cold it is outside that will influence my decision not to paint that day. The question that I have to ask myself is," How windy is it out there ? I think that I have reached a time in my plien air painting career when it is not fun while setting up to paint, only to fined that I will have to chase my canvas, easel and paints down the road or into a snow filled ditch, because of the wind.. I think that all of us at one time or another has been humiliated by the wind.

This piece was painted on a pregessoed and stained (red/ orange) Masonite panel using my usual limited palette. Again, I have added a couple of extra colours. Sap green, raw sienna and a "no name blue" were the colours added to my palette. My medium was OMS (odourless mineral spirits).

A fun piece to paint.. ( Hmmm, that blue has got to go ! )

'til next..

Hi Frank.
Another winner mate. Your colours seem to get better and better. I am still using a warm under painting, but it is Pinkish. I will try that for a while. All the best Frank.

Hi Victor.. I see that you are still pounding them out. Those snow photos are really something else, even for around here.
I think that the "pink" is a softer background and is better suited for a less heavy brush stroke.Suttle on suttle, so to speak. The warmth still shows through in the lighter passages. NIce!
Thanks for the compliment and for checking these things out .. :)

Best of the Season to you and yours..

I love checking in on your blog, and reading your thoughts about each painting, sometimes about the place and sometimes about how you proceeded to paint it. I paint outdoors usaully in pastel, but have done some in oil-and have been told by a menter to not to use the oms as a medium, yet I read here today tthat you do. I useally have a mix of stand oil, damar varnish and turps, I guess it is. I also use one by Gamsol---this really is confussing to me. I use the Blic canvasses untill I do better for out doors, and I do enjoy it. If you have time to explain, thanks in advance. Ida

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the weather forecast! Your painting is wounderful as usual,
in my opinion I would keep that no name blue, it contrast nicely with the other colors and adds a lively touch to the otherwise subdue athmosfere. I love that no name blue, is toward turquoise or a very light blue green. Finally here we got 20/30 degreees on the last couple of days, that's why I went inside a studio to paint tonight. Nice worm and with a nice model. A winning combination. Keep worm

Mario.. I am still waiting for that last fair weather to arrive by email, Mario ! Now you are painting inside the studio with a model at the first sign of cool weather ? Nice life ! :)
I will have to think about that blue and your opinion. It seems to be a "phalo" of some sort. It is an old tube with the label missing.
Thanks for the compliment, Mario.
By the way, keep the weather, send the model !
:) , Best of the Season to you and yours.

Wow! I just got into painting a few months ago, and I am currently working on my first ever oil painting (because I had a coupon so I went and bought some haha). This painting is so beautiful! Do you have any tips for a beginning oil painter?

Ida.. Thanks for checking out my blog and the paintings. I am sorry that there is this confusion about mediums.
I think that in many cases the medium chosen is a preference of the experienced artist and the technique he/she is currently using.
As a Plein Air painter, I try to keep it simple. I think that the less medium used is probably still the best way to go.
Of course, there are times when the paint has to be 'thinned' for certain applications or method in which you work.
For this reason, I use a single solvent outside, usually odourless mineral spirits. At one time (a long time ago) I used turps, only to be informed much later that the toxins in the turps may be absorbed through the skin. That was when I quit using turps, even though it smelled 'like art' !
I feel that the paint from the tube contains the right amount of oil for its application and therefore does not require a medium mixture containing more oil to thin it.
Just remember not to use to much of the thinner as one does not want to break down the binding qualities of the paint to the support.
Don't you just hate rules?..
This is probably worth remembering..
" Just work thin to thick, or lean to fat and when using mediums, less is more. " Not to worry !Experience will teach you if it is necessary to change your medium and why.
Hope that this helps..
Good luck with your paintings.

Raz Darnell..Thank you very much for the compliment.

I guess the best thing that I could suggest would be to ... Keep it simple, do not get discouraged and practice,practice,..practice !

Good Luck ! :)
