Early Winter Ice ..10" x 12" ..Oil/Panel

Yes, ice on the edge of the banks has got to be a hint of what is to come. I am not sure that I am ready for it

As you can see, this piece was painted on my usual pre-stained panel. In this case, it is the orange-red wash that was applied over two coats of gesso.
Since I have not mentioned my palette in a number of posts, it may be time to do so. The colours for this painting were: Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Alizarin, Cadmium Red Lt.,Cadmium Yellow Med., Lemon Yellow and Titanium White. I also put out a bit of Yellow Ochre for convenience.

I began by dividing the scene into large shapes and laying the darks ( alizarin and ultramarine blue) within these shapes, changing the values (darker) as I proceeded from background to foreground. Once I had completed this step, it was more or less a case of working with the colours of the objects within the large shapes, working from the medium values of that particular object's colour to the lightest values. When the whole of the painting was completed in this manner, it was time to play up the brightest of the hi-lights.

Adjustments were made to the painting as I painted by changing colours or values as needed or dictated by the scene.

Yes, winter is coming fast...

'til next..

Hi Frank,
lovely oil , thanks for all the detail. Dress worm . Down here today the first day it rained for 6o minutes, outside temp.is 61.5F at 9:30 p.m. it was in the 70 before. They call it winter! I would gladly exchange the temperatures for some of your scenery! Happy painting

This is a glorious painting - even from the tiny avatar in my favorite blog roll it sparkled.
You have painted the light so masterfully!

I never thought of that, but now that you mention it, I think that you are right. It does seem to have that feeling.
