"Autumn Pasture" 11" x 14" O/PThis painting is a studio piece and is my interpretation of a photograph that I had taken earlier this fall. It was a rainy, stay inside and paint day today.
The palette for this painting (at the beginning) was Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and Titanium White. I like the use of these colours as they seem to be more subdued than starting with the usual limited palette. As the painting progressed, I felt it was time to gradually introduce mixtures of Alizarin, Cadmium Yellow Medium, and Cerulean Blue.
My painting process was what I think is a traditional method. I applied the "darks' first, followed by the "medium colours" and finally finishing with the "lights". My initial colours were applied (scumbled) thinly and fairly dry. The succeeding colours were applied using the "fat over lean" rule.
I think that the colours for this painting appear fairly subdued and at the same time, "rich".
