A Window To Another Place And Time

My few days away from painting turned into more than just, "life interfering". I had what turned from a simple break into a full fledged holiday. As it turned out, I spent an enjoyable week in the Boston, U.S.A. area before heading up the east coast into Canada and the Province of New Brunswick. After leaving New Brunswick, we entered the Province of Quebec , on into the Province of Ontario and finally home. It was a fantastic holiday and a welcome change. No painting or sketching was attempted, although it was not far from my mind.
Wolfe Island is a large island in the east end of Lake Ontario, and named after Major General Wolfe. It can be reached by ferry from Kingston , Canada and on the south shore from The United States.
This piece is painted on canvas that had been prepared with three coats of gesso and a final light coat of yellow-yellow Burnt Sienna wash. A little different from my usual 'red'. I found this base colour to be less striking in the final painting even though the final colours did pick up the warmth of that base colour.
My palette for this painting consisted of Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin, Cadmium Medium Red, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yellow Light, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Chromium Oxide, Veridian and Titanium White. My medium was Odourless Mineral Spirits, used more sparingly as the painted neared completion.
It was a fun painting to work on even though I was interrupted near the end by a soft rain. Nothing like having nature tell you when to call it quits.
All in all, it is great to be back at it.
