"The Locks - Revisited" 11"x 14" Oil on Panel

It is always enjoyable to return to Kingston Mills to paint. Even though there are many scenes to paint here, it just seems that I am drawn to the locks. These locks are the first of a series of locks as you leave Lake Ontario at Kingston, Ontario and cruise toward Canada's capital city of Ottawa.

This painting was started with a quick pencil sketch on a Orange-red prepared panel followed by a deep purple wash ( plenty of medium) in the shadow and darker areas . I left these areas to air dry for a few minutes before continuing to redraw or define some of the lines or spots that were lost to the wash.

Using my limited palette and a few additional as usual, favourite colours, I proceeded to apply the paint, trying to match the darker values of the colours seen in the scene to my panel. These colours were applied or 'scumbled ' over the previous dark purple wash.

Local mid value colours were applied over the previous darker values and to the other subjects in the same manor . Finally, the brightest values or colours were applied in an impressionistic manor to the detailed areas as in the "fat over lean" rule.

Lastly, I adjusted some shadow areas and darkened or lightened other objects that I felt had gotten lost during the painting processes.

A fun scene to paint on a hot summer day.

'til next

Frank, This is a lively piece... I remember seeing it on WC. I have spent a bit of time going through the Kawarthas and near some of the locks in that area. Your piece captures that part of Ont very nicely... love the dark reflects in the FG left under the concrete!

cheers, Mike
