"The Maple Sugar Shack - Until Next Spring" 10 x12" O/P

It looks like a lot of colour was used in this painting. In reality, it was the same palette of colours that I had used for previous paintings.

The big difference in this painting from the others is the background colour that I applied prier to painting. I used a combination red and cadmium yellow medium to get the orange used for the base coat. I feel that this bright colour base coat had a great influence on the application of the paint and the final impression of the subject. The colours to me seem "animated" and the painting speaks more of "colour expressionism".

As Spring seems to be taking longer than usual to arrive and the late winter colours linger, I find this painting to be a refreshing visual substitute.

'til next..

Hi Frank, these portraits of houses are wonderful and I like that they are always a little tilted. I think that visualizes their character.

Thanks for linking me. I have done the same vice versa.
Cheers...Nue

Yeo Nue !

Thanks for the comment.I have been asked about "that tilt" and I have often stumbled for a reply.
I love the way you have put it, "visualizes their character". NIce ! I shall remember that.

Thanks for the "vice versa". :-)

Wow Frank - its amazing that the same palette produced such different moods. It goes to show that it is the artist who manipulates the medium and not the other way around.

Thanks Cara. Yes it is amazing. I have gone from a full palette two years ago to a limited palette at the present. It started as an experiment and never fails to accomodate. I still use old favorites from time to time...:-),old habits, I guess.

Hope your art is going well.

Cheers...

I just found your blog from the wetcanvas forum. I see you're a fellow Ontario resident, is your work for sale or on display anywhere? I'd love to see it in person :)

This painting's color use really caught my eye. I enjoy the looseness of your brush strokes. Looks effortless, but I know it's not!

It's fascinating to watch how your application of colour changes as the seasons progress

Katherine. Thanks for your comment to this blog. I do not know how you keep all these blogs straight. Looks like a full time job. :-)

I am now "messing around" with different coloured backgrounds just to see the varied effects and influences they may have on the final 'seasonal' piece. Nothing complicated but interesting just the same.

Take care.

Rob...Thanks. It is surprising how these background colours influence the outcome of the final work. Not just the colours applied, but the technique as well IMHO.

Take care...
