"Deserted Cheese Factory" 9"x12" O/Panel

This painting is from a photo reference. In this particular instance, I used a portion of the subject in the photograph and brought it into the foreground of the painting. (the building and tree)
I mention this because I do not believe that one ( especially novice painters) should be intimidated into using the whole photo just because it is there. After all, the photo is a tool, a means to an end and a great resourse to be manipulated by the artist.

The support was Masonite with a ground coat mixture of gesso, and a "warm" grey ( approx. a number five value ) applied to the surface.

This particular work was painted with a number ten flat brush, rigger and a limited palette. The colours that I used were, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Med., and Titanium White. As I painted, I added Raw Sienna, Payne's Grey, Terre Verte and Indian Red as needed to create the "feel" that I wanted in the finished piece.

Painting from a photo reference (inside) is and alternative... but , there is no substitute , in my humble opinion for just "being out there" .

'til next.

Hi Frank,
It looks like you've been very busy building your studio. I'm sure you will enjoy it for a long time.

I think winter is finally coming to Raleigh. I'll be in studio for a while.

Take care.
